Santa Run 2013

Today I ran my fifth race... The Santa Run in Ogden. Yes it was a little bit crazy to drive 3 hours just for a race and drive back 2 hours later, but SO worth it.
Everyone who ran got a Santa suit to run in, and a shirt. So off I went, solo I might add. Brandon had to work.
When I got there, they told me there was no drop for keys or phones... So I held both during the race. We also started right next to the under-construction Ogden temple... It's so pretty!
So like I said, I was given my suit and went back to change. Luckily I had the foresight to wear running clothes under my suit, because when I put it on I accidentally stepped on the seams and it split. Like, halfway to the knees split. Whoops. So I ran like that, because what do you expect from cheap felt?
I got someone to take my picture to send to everyone, and this is the full getup:
I was smiling under the beard... You just can't tell.
Here's about a fourth of the people running in the race, just to give you an idea of how many Santas were running with me:
Seriously. It was awesome. And there were baby Santas and elves, and dogs dressed up, and Christmas music playing, and milk and cookies at the water stations... Christmas heaven. Even if I didn't have any of the milk or cookies, because I didn't feel like throwing up on the track if we had to double back on it 3 times.
I am so grateful that my body is used enough to running that a 5k is not a big deal anymore. Because otherwise I would have died... I have not been able to get out much and train.
One more race down! The next one is probably going to be the Famous Idaho Potato half... Bring it!

Thankful list and Thanksgiving 2013

So I've been a little quiet on the blog front... sorry.
But I have officially finished my first trimester of teaching! Hardest thing of my life. But I expect the next 2 semesters will be just as busy, but easier and won't make me go as gray.
But I am so thankful for a lot of things with this holiday season.
1) I'm thankful for Dane. This little tiny human has made my life so much better. I mean seriously, how cute is he?
2) I'm thankful for the chance we have to go to PA school next year. I am so grateful for this chance for so many reasons. I am excited for this chance we have to further our education, and to go live somewhere that will really put us on our own. On top of that, we have family there, and it will be so fun to hang out with Tanner and Alyse.
On top of that, our road trip out there this year will be so fun. We are starting by heading to Denver for a family reunion, then going to Miami from there. It's about 40 hours of driving, and I planned it so we'll visit a couple new temples on our way... not the least of which Vernal Utah, OK City, and possibly Denver if we have time. We will also get to see AT&D in Dallas, and our road trip takes us a mile from where "Duck Dynasty" is filmed... success!
Am I scared of living out there? Heck yeah. It's expensive, and I'm going to need to work the whole time Brandon's in his program so that we can afford to live. Visiting home will be a lot harder, if we get to at all. (We probably will at least once.) But we said we wanted to live somewhere outside our normal comfort zone, and Florida fits that bill.
3) I'm SO thankful for Brandon. He's such a good thing for me... he knows what makes me happy and sometimes knows me better than I know myself. For example, we went shopping this morning to take advantage of some of the deals out there (because we refuse to line up to shop on Thanksgiving), and he saw me deciding on what I should get. We're trying to save money to drive to California for Christmas, but he didn't remind me of that. He didn't say anything, in fact. And, instead of buying probably $50 worth of clothes, I ended up talking myself out of it and buying only $20, $5 of which were a new wallet I needed. It was sneaky, but smart.
I hear girls complain that their husband doesn't put away the dishes, or clean up, or cook, and I think, "Ew. Why would you marry someone who doesn't do that?" Now, I know that's judgmental, but I am seriously spoiled by Brandon. Not only does he do all those things, but he LIKES to do all those things. I don't think it's his favorite, but he likes having a clean apartment enough that he will do those for me without guilting me.
4) I'm thankful for the temple. We've made a goal to go once a week until the end of the year, and then I'm sure I will continue that through the end of the school year. It has been so nice. It was interesting, because life got harder as soon as I decided that. I knew it was the world conspiring against my plan, so I decided to keep it up. So take that, Satan! Also, we just figured out that I had a family name from Russia... who knew?

So this year for Thanksgiving, we stayed in Rexburg. It was SO low key. We had dinner with other friends, and just enjoyed ourselves. There was a table for couples without kids, so we got to sit there and talk when everyone else was running around chasing their kids. Win win... because we'll go through that in a few years I'm sure.
In keeping up with our tradition, we wore Christmas/"ugly" apparel for Thanksgiving.
In case you were wondering, we have worn this for the last 2 Thanksgivings as well... Check it out.
2011(This one always cracks me up.):
2012:
Note the lack of a mustache this year. I'm also very thankful for this. I've told him he can grow out his scruff however he wants, if he doesn't do a mustache again.

Tater Trot.

I ran my first 10K race today. I signed up for it after the Temple to Temple Relay. It was something I wanted to do on my way to my half marathon, and it would keep me motivated to keep running. It also takes place of a Turkey Trot run that I wanted to do. It was in Blackfoot, about an hour away. So luckily it didn't start at 7 AM like I thought earlier this week.
I was surprised at how small of a venue it was. We were at the park right off the freeway, and to give you an idea  of how small it was, the announcer didn't even use a megaphone. He told us we had from 8:30 until they stopped timing at 10:00 if we wanted our times to be tracked. So I had a goal to beat.
This shirt is sweet though! It's a long sleeved shirt and says on the back, "I'm not a couch potato, I'm a Tater Trotter!" Amen.
After we got started, Brandon ran around to the other side of the parking lot and caught me as I came around. I make super cute faces.
I was surprised at how well my legs did in my run. I wasn't even the last person to come in... so that was a success. I did stop for a minute at the drink table, but that's ok.
I came in running my race in 1:13:06, which is much faster than my pace in the relay. Brandon wanted me to do this for my victory pose. My idea was for me to have my head between my knees, but I'll probably save that for my half marathon.
So, you may have been asking yourself, "Why was this called the 'Tater Trot'? Besides the fact that it is in Idaho..." Well, they had a meal for all the runners.
A baked potato. And I may have been just starving from the run, but it was SO good.
I successfully ran 6.2 miles in a race, and I didn't even die. Next stop, Santa Run!

Thankful list '13- Days 4-7

Day 4- Today, I'm thankful for our cars. It's starting to get colder here (ahhhhh, Rexburg winter. You will NOT be missed ever.), but we don't even feel it when driving. I love our little Jeep and Pathfinder, and I'm going to be sad when we sell/return them. Selling Brandon's Jeep will be especially hard, because it belonged to his grandpa Putnam and I know that puts an additional emotional attachment on it. And it has been SO good to us in the snow. If it only got about 3 times the gas mileage, I'd keep it in a second.
Day 5- I'm thankful for Daylight Savings ending. I got to go to work when it was light, and come home when it was light. It was a nice surprise.
Day 6- I'm thankful for the temple. I went tonight to do some work for a couple of family names. While I was there, I ran into one of my old friends from freshman year, who I haven't seen in years! It was so wonderful to see her, and to feel thankful that we both turned out OK from our crazy days of 2008. Going to the temple is so great, especially when I go after a day of school.

Day 7-I'm grateful for a husband (really, I could do 30 day of why I'm thankful for Brandon) who got up, no questions asked, to check the apartment when I heard our door rattle. It really did I swear! But he got up at o' dark 30 to check it for me... Nothing to report. (Note: that was yesterday. Today he almost got punched in the throat because he accidentally woke me up and scared the living daylights out of me at 4 am. Still thankful for him though!)

Thankful List '13- Days 1-3

I'm just going to do a thankful list this year, but doing one every day will be nuts. But, I think grouping these posts together will work well. I definitely have a lot to be thankful for.
Day 1- I'm thankful for my job. That feeling changes about 4 times a day, but right now I am feeling positive and confident in my job. I am learning how to balance everything. The last few weeks I've felt like I've been doing OK. Just learning to get through it, and as long as I don't feel like I'm forgetting something major I'm ok. It's also stretching me as far as I can go. I'm finally learning how to work as hard as I can, which is something that was long overdue.
Sure, my job isn't ideal. I have a headache every day, but I'm doing it!
Best of all, I LOVE my kids. I told them the other day what I was going to be for Halloween, but I just gave them clues.  One girl whispered in my ear, "I don't remember his name, but are you going to be the guy from Where's Waldo?" I laughed really hard at that.
The other day my class was talking about how they didn't want to live anywhere near an ocean because they would get eaten by sharks. I said, "No, that's not true. I lived by an ocean for almost 20 years and I never saw a shark in the water!" They said, "WOW! 20 years?? You must be almost 40!!" Major sad face.
Day 2- I'm thankful for my two missionary brothers. It's pretty rough to have 2 brothers out at the same time, especially with all the fun time I've had with them just before they left. I loved having Austin come up and visit his freshman year, and it was even more touching to walk in on him in our guest bedroom one time and find him reading his scriptures. Dallin came up to Idaho for almost a week last summer, and it was so fun to go out to Twin Falls with him. I didn't realize that would be the only summer we would have him visiting us up here, otherwise I would have done more fun things with him. Both of my brothers are my heroes, because of how hard they are working on their missions. We just celebrated Austin's 21st birthday, and it makes me so happy that he'll be home soon. My heart won't be complete until they're both honorably home.
Bahahaha Austin as Jason... he never took that off.

Day 3- I'm so thankful for the power of prayer. Just a preface on that. For those who don't know, my uncle Wes suffered a brain hemorrhage from a disease he had that he didn't know he had, called AVM. He was on business in NYC, which saved his life ultimately. It was touch and go for a while, but he managed to pull through, and make it through rehab in record time. It is amazing to see that the power of prayer works. Every day since it happens I have been thankful for his progress, and have tried to stay optimistic even when it didn't seem too good. We sure love Wes, and I am SO glad we got to spend time together this summer. We went to dinner with them  at the end of July, and it was so fun to see Wes' old stomping grounds in Idaho Falls. I'm thankful for his recovery and the power of the prayers that went into strengthening him and his family.

Halloween 2013

Halloween was low key this year. Again. We just have a hard time planning it when Halloween falls on a day when we don't see each other at all. The next time we get to go to a Halloween party, we are going to go ALL OUT.
But, this year wasn't too bad. The Special Ed teacher and aides at school usually plan a group costume, and as usual Brandon helped me come up with the theme.
Where's Waldo! I couldn't find a shirt that had red and white stripes, so I just improvised with a white shirt from DI and red duct tape. It was a success, even the kids told me "Hey, you look like the guy from Where's Waldo!"
But here's the 3 Waldos, one of my aides was a baseball player.
Side note: I made the hat. I figured out how to make a pom pom... I smell an etsy sale.
Brandon was even less ready for Halloween than I was... he wore an orange shirt under his scrubs and called it good.
I did get home and find something to keep me from going trick or treating:
We will dress up again someday, but for now we'll settle for taking selfies.
Brandon went to the temple while I was at work. He said he wants to make it a tradition, because what better way to clown rate Halloween than by doing work for the dead? He's so righteous. Love him!

A weekend with two of my favorite men.

I don't get to spend that much time with just my dad. So, when he said he was going to be in Utah over the same three day weekend I had from school, we made it happen so we could head down.
Our original plan was that I would bring Brandon to work for the Friday morning shift (6 to 2), them pick him up and we would be on our way. That hit a snag, however, when Brandon went to go wake his wife up and got a growl in return. I will go ahead and excuse myself... It was parent teacher conference week and it was long.
So, instead of us leaving from Rexbrg at about 1:30, we left at 3. We were trying to make it down to the Boise State BYU game, and we did make it but around halftime. It was still great... And BYU won! My favorite commercial was where someone was determining statehood for different territories, but Boise applied and they denied it. The caption was, "Boise is not a state." Haha I loved it.
Brandon and I.
We are so much shorter than my dad.
The next day, we started out by going to the gym. It's been a while, and I'm running a 10K in 2 weeks so I figured I should get a start on that... And it was painful. But after that, we went to the Draper temple and it was BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, I can't get enough of these temples. We were there for a couple hours, and I just felt a peace that everything was going to be fine.
We took our customary picture outside the temple (#15 for Brandon and I)...

We hit up Mac's lacrosse game, and then got ready for the custom Brick Oven cousin dinner. It's been years and I've never made it down to one, so I was thrilled to be a part of this one. I think hanging out with cousins is the best.
And, look who showed up!
Sunday was spent at church with Grandma and Grandpa Murphy, followed by naps and another Murphy cousin dinner.
It was seriously a great weekend, I'm so glad we had the chance to come down. Now, if I could fight off this impending cold it would be even better!

First year of teaching, continued.

Ok, yeah it's been a while. It's been a long couple of weeks... except for Spud Harvest. That was a beautiful week off. I went to California, and didn't worry about a single school-related thing. But ever since then I've been up to my nose in work... The learning curve just got a little more steep.
But instead of dwelling on that, I'm trying to think of the positive things that are going on and that I'm grateful for.
-I have such a great support network.
- I don't always agree with all of the teachers, and it's weird being in charge of the aides that have more experience than I do, but when it comes to the kids I work with some of the most compassionate people ever.

Also, I'm almost done with my first semester! yayyyyy.
I can safely say I have worked my TAIL off this semester.

Barry University.

So, Brandon had his interview in Miami for PA school last week. This interview was REALLY early, because all the other emails said something to the effect of around the new year. But we were so excited! Just having an interview was a good sign.
He stayed with Tanner and Alyse (and sent me a picture of their cute baby boy):

I was on pins and needles the entire time. I knew that Brandon would do well, and between his Spanish history, work history, and raw animal magnetism (No? Not a qualification for PA school?) he would do fine. But still. It's nerve-wracking!
Well, he called me tonight... HE GOT IN!!!! Yessssss! It is STILL super early, since he hasn't heard back at all from any of the other schools. But they have a deposit, which we are going to put down now. And see what happens with other schools.
But yay! I'm so excited. This week has been one of learning at school, and it's good to know we have a future beyond Rexburg. (I like Rexburg, really I do. Just after a while...)

Temple to Temple Relay

Yesterday we ran the Temple to Temple Relay. MAN it was tiring!
We were in the earliest wave, meaning we were the slowest. Butttttt that was pretty typical. I loved the team spirit that was everywhere. People pulled off the side of the road to cheer people on, and not just for their teams.
Brandon ran the leg right before mine, which was 5.2 miles. Of course he did great, he ran it in less than 50 minutes. He is such a good athlete, even if he gets nervous before his runs and doesn't think he'll do well.
I ran the 5th leg, which was 6.8 miles. Umm, up until that point the furthest I had run EVER was 4.5 miles. I was so nervous beforehand, and I just kept praying that I wouldn't succumb to the cold. It was really cold and windy. I would be lying if I said I didn't walk, but when the wind is against you for so long it takes it out of you. They had mile markers, but I'm pretty sure they weren't in the right spot. For example, it said I ran my first mile in 6:30. Now I KNOW that can't be true, but it was great motivation.
When I hit mile 5, I said, "Ok, I have officially run further than I have ever run before. Now let's finish this sucker." And I tried my very hardest to run my bunnies off.
When I crossed the finish line and passed off the baton (a snap bracelet), I sat down and my legs immediately went to sleep. I rested for a minute, then we were off to the next leg. Something scary happened on the way there. We were driving, and saw a huge combine with the sign "oversize load" driving behind some runners. One girl in neon yellow did not seem to notice it. I commented to the people in our car, "Man, that guy's going to hit her if he's not careful." But we kept driving, with our friends behind us. When we got to the drop off zone for the next leg, our friends weren't behind us. Rachel called her sister, who was in the car. They said the combine actually did hit that girl about 10 seconds after we passed her. We didn't even see it, but they said she had a huge gash over her eye, a broken arm, and a pretty bad concussion. She was talking about her laundry when they pulled over. Of course, that freaked me out! The last full song that was playing during my run pushed me to run has hard as I can for those couple of minutes, and I think if I had walked there she would have passed me. Who knows, that could have been me. But I think that I had a guardian angel watching over me, and he or she helped me get to that finish line when I did.
Brandon snapped some pictures of me running up to the finish line... embarrassing.
I have my tongue stuck out... because I'm just pretending to be tired.
Phew.
Pain. As soon as I sat down my legs went numb.
Yes, I'm smiling!
Rachel and I... between the 2 of us we ran 14 miles. I'm glad I have a friend to challenge me!
Oh, and PS, Brandon had to go straight to work instead of to the finish line. What a champ.
(At the finish line, Idaho Falls temple)
This made me think a couple things. One, I need to work on my pace. Two, if I ran 7 miles without too much strain (after the fact), then I can definitely do my half in May. I just need to keep running, and both of these things will come to pass.

Oh yeah. One guy ran it by himself... and he ran it faster than our team. He ran the entire 39.5 miles by himself. It was insane to watch.
